PPL Sunbury-Hamilton Project

2024

The Sunbury Hamilton Transmission Rebuild project was a 10 line mile transmission rebuild for PPL from Sunbury to Augustaville PA. The project consisted of rebuilding a portion of the Sunbury Hamilton line that left the Sunbury Station and crossed the Susquehanna River. The other portion was a complete rebuild of the Sunbury Elder transmission line that started at the Sunbury Station and went all the way to the Augustaville Station.

Challenges:

Susquehanna River Crossing

A portion of this project had foundations that needed to be installed on Byers Island. In order to access the island a temporary causeway had to be built and a barge was assembled that had the capacity to support roughly 100 tons of equipment and tooling. It took four full loads to successfully deliver all of the rebar, permanent casings, two drills with tooling, and an ICE Model 110 vibration hammer to the island. Additionally, concrete logistics were extremely important in order to ensure that concrete trucks were offloaded within the allotted time frame. Sam and Son worked hand in hand with the concrete provider and barge operator to ensure that two trucks were always being delivered to or from the island ensuring a smooth concrete placement process. Approximately 500 cubic yards of concrete was transported and installed across the four foundations.

Foundation Design

Four of the foundations designed for installation on Byers Island were built to accommodate water level fluctuations that the Susquehanna River experiences. These foundations were designed to have a top of concrete elevation ranging from ten to twelve feet above existing grade. All four foundations were ten feet in diameter by 54 to 57 feet deep. Additionally, in order to ensure that the foundations were protected from the constant water exposure the above grade portion of these foundations had permanent galvanized casings installed. Crews had to work on specialized ladders with built in fall protection cages to allow for safe work at those heights.

Ground Conditions

The project only spanned approximately 5 physical miles, however, the ground conditions varied drastically in the area. Drilling varied from having to core rock from ground level to having to vibrate permanent casings down to depth due to poor soil conditions.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Length of Foundations Installed below water level?
  • Coordination with Ib-Abel to successfully install 4 foundations on Byers Island without delays or incidents.
